You’re healing every time you

  • get out of bed because there’s something you’re excited about.
  • don’t think about people who left.
  • clean the clutter in the room and dishes in your sink.
  • smile at yourself and random people.
  • do something kind and out of the blue to make someone happy.
  • work out or meet with friends even though you have no energy to.
  • calm yourself down when your thoughts race.
  • remember to drink water.
  • don’t dwell on things you can’t control.
  • do things good for yourself, even though you have no motivation.
  • tell yourself that you’re growing from this, and you won’t feel like this forever.

“The sun feels like a memory retracing its ghostly fingertips across my skin when I step outside. The longing, the wanting, the yearning of growing up I had at nine years old is apparent—so, so present. I begin biting my cuticles as a ritual of nervousness, of knowing that past is gone. I chew down to blood, planting myself on the sidewalk begging to become root, plant, tree blossoming with the flowers I always wished to flourish. No buds spawn. No seeds decide to flutter away in the wind like dandelion. The clouds have covered the sun and as they do, I cloud over. The sudden chill sends shivers through my core. I am here, but hazy. Miles and miles of fog cloak my aging body, and I am afraid. What have I become in this overcast body of mine? A thing of hopeful light, longing to escape their ever-present shadow.”
